Holiday Craft Fair

Tweety birdMembers, I know that you get from all angles, but it is important that the word is out. The Holiday Craft Fair represents 1/3 of our revenue each year, and without it we can not help our community as we do. I understand your hesitation, knowing that we do not get the kind of money you want for your projects. Think of it as a donation. Be glad you were able to help.

A little background, The Craft Fair is held at a school boutique, where those attending are looking for a bargain, a gift for the family, and in an area that, cannot afford, or won't, spend big bucks.

Plus, we do not have the member support to take it out to big fairs, like Walnut Creek. So.... any help you can lend us will help YOUR club.

Here is 2 cents more. I have heard this from members. "I don't want to make anything because you don't ask enough". Like I said prior, donate it and let it go, we need the support.

The Craft Fair is on Dec 01, 2018 at Pleasant Hill Adult Ed School, room 112 next to the back parking lot. 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

PREVIOUS MEETING

Tony Wolcott
OCTOBER 10th, 2018 MEETING, MULTI-USE ROOM 7-9 PM.
TONY WOLCOTT - California Native Plants, their Identification and Wood Usage.

There is so much to see out in the so called 'natural' world. And we can still see it if we just venture out to the many natural areas. Start with East Bay Regional Parks. There are 73 Regional Parks with 1,250 miles of trails. Identifying trees can be a tricky business. Take oaks for instance. There are 21 species, ten sturdy tree oaks, native to California. There are trees masquerading as California natives, but we know they are foreigners. Can you spot the imposters? And what about those nasty noxious weed trees? We all need to recognize them in order to turf them out. What natives are good wood trees? And what trees are best left for the woodpeckers? These and more topics were discussed.

SHOP TOURS/SAWDUST SESSION DETAILS

SATURDAY, November 17, 2018 SHOP TOUR, 10AM - NOON
Shop of Adam White, 908 Windward Drive, Rodeo, CA 94572.

Due to the very poor air quality, we are cancelling the shop tour schedule for, November 17th. The tour of Adam White's shop will be re-scheduled for early next year.

Adam has a hybrid metal/woodworking shop in his two car garage. He's currently working to finish a kayak built out of dog ear fence pickets that he started probably 9 years ago. It has been appropriately named "Decade". He also has a large Powermatic drill press on which he replaced the 3 phase motor with a 1 phase motor, but hasn't installed a mag switch yet. Many of us will recognize long-term projects and improvements in process.

Sorry, no pets or minor children due to liability issues.

Memorial Flag Case Project

Since the 9/11 tragedy, the Diablo Woodworkers have channeled some of their woodworking passion into compassion for the families of fallen firefighters and law enforcement officers - the survivors of those who have given their last full measure in protecting others.

We honor those families with memorial flag cases that have been crafted from California (Claro) walnut and accented with silver maple corner splines. Each case is finished with Danish oil and buffed out to a smooth finish.

These memorial flag cases are provided to all law enforcement and firefighting units in the San Francisco Bay area. We are proud to have worked with over 100 families in the past 10 years and will continue to honor the fallen.

Gordon Fry, 925-685-1676 is the Chairperson for this project. Plans for these flag cases are on our club web site.
