PREVIOUS MEETING

Michael BrayJUNE 12 2019 MEETING, MULTI-USE ROOM, 6-9 PM.
Michael Bray, Custom Woodworker and Teacher

Our June speaker was Michael Bray. He provided his own write up and photos below.

From my early days in Art School to my current stint as a custom woodworker and teacher, I will cover some highlights, as well as a few war stories, particularly what it was like working for a super-wealthy client, but also including my years drawing for Woodwork magazine.

I trained as a Graphic Designer, but lost interest about the time I saw my first Garret Wade catalog! I worked in the paper industry, then as a handyman for a while. During this time I started submitting articles to woodworking magazines. Woodwork magazine ran my first article, then eventually hired me as their illustrator. I eventually became a full-time custom furniture maker, and all these years later am now teaching more than making. I teach at the Randall Museum in SF, the Crucible in Oakland, and at Facebook in Menlo Park. And just founded the Bay Area Spoon Carvers last year! Website: http://www.michaelbraydesign.com

June 2018 Shop Tour Photos

Home Shop Tour of Steve Sowden, 1380 Brighton Drive, Tracy 95376. 619-379-5350

Steve SowdenSteve Sowden met us with "Welcome to the OCD shop." Steve likes to know where everything is, so most of his tools are on display. Also on display were two projects in construction: a bow-front table and the sides of a tool cabinet, both with plans on display. He made all of his tables, cabinets, benches, and vacuum system components, among other items. He also has an extra-high (10'?) woodshed in which he has a lot of exotic hardwoods stored. Many of those pieces were purchased from San Diego woodworkers at their shop tours. Steve hasn't found much interest in Tracy for a woodworking group. We can expect to see more of him at Diablo Woodworkers as his schedule permits. Although it took about an hour to drive to Tracy, it was well worth the trip.

Check out the photos of his shop shown below

Memorial Flag Case Project

Since the 9/11 tragedy, the Diablo Woodworkers have channeled some of their woodworking passion into compassion for the families of fallen firefighters and law enforcement officers - the survivors of those who have given their last full measure in protecting others.

We honor those families with memorial flag cases that have been crafted from California (Claro) walnut and accented with silver maple corner splines. Each case is finished with Danish oil and buffed out to a smooth finish.

These memorial flag cases are provided to all law enforcement and firefighting units in the San Francisco Bay area. We are proud to have worked with over 100 families in the past 10 years and will continue to honor the fallen.

Gordon Fry, 925-685-1676 is the Chairperson for this project. Plans for these flag cases are on our club web site.
