JUNE 11th MEETING, 7-9 PM AT PHEC, ROOM 112
RANDY ANGELLA, CLASSICAL GUITAR LUTHIER

Randy Angella started studying classical guitars in 1970 and began his career as a Luthier in 1975. In his 30 plus years of building, Mr. Angella has established relationships with, and provided instruments to, many of the prominent performers and teachers of our time. Randy currently builds guitars in Concord, California, is instructing two apprentices, and is active providing guitars for performers, students, collectors, composers and Classical Guitar enthusiasts all across the United States and Canada. He has also been asked to teach classes in French Polishing at a number of fine woodworking shops in the Bay Area. You can learn more about Randy and his art at www.angellaguitars.com.

July 9th MEETING, 7-9 PM AT PHEC, ROOM 112
JIM MARIEIRO, WOOD CARVER

Jim Marieiro started carving at the age of 12 for a merit badge in the Boy Scouts. By 16 he had carved a few dozen duck decoys for his own use and continued to carve various kinds of birds over the next 20 years. The late Mario Marchi, a famous carver from the Bay Area met Jim and took him under his wing and became his mentor. Jim started winning numerous awards at carving shows across the State. Jim is a Taxidermist by trade and his knowledge of anatomy served him well. About 8 years ago he started carving fish and entering those in competitions. He has won State and National awards for his fish carvings and is currently the volunteer wood carving teacher at the Pleasant Hill adult education center.

JUNE 21st SHOP TOUR, 9 AM -NOON
ANDY FERGUSON'S SHOP, 7 CROWN CT., ORINDA, 925-376-5366

This is an outstanding shop and not to be missed. The shop is over 600 hundred square feet and designed to mimic the look of the house. Construction is 2X6, vaulted ceilings, and dormers. The large power tools are all first class including Powermatic Cabinet Saw and 20 inch Planer. Andy has the biggest Agazzani Band Saw I have ever seen at a residential shop. Base cabinets and wall cabinets line one long wall. These cabinets were beautifully built by Andy using excellent joinery and wood working techniques.
Directions: From Hwy 24 take the Orinda off ramp and travel East on Moraga Way. Turn left onto Ivy Drive and go three blocks up the hill to Crown Ct. Turn left into the court. Andy's shop is behind the house off of a private road. Parking is somewhat limited so you may want to car pool.

JULY 19th SHOP TOUR, 9 AM -NOON
ROGER GILES'S SHOP, 2823 WISWALL DR., RICHMOND, 925-223-2517

This is one of the smaller DW shops. (Less than 240 square feet). The shop is detached from the house and well insulated so sound doesn't reach the house or the neighbors. Because of well thought out equipment placement most jobs can be done without moving tools at all or very little. Small power hand tools are stored in plastic tubs on shelves around the walls. Hand tools are hung on magnets inside three deep hinged overhead cabinets. Everything that can be hung above the equipment where it doesn't take up floor space is. Much of the assembly and finishing work is done outside under a 20 foot by 20 foot tent.
Directions: From Hwy. 80 take the Hilltop Drive off ramp. Take Hilltop Drive West (Toward the Bay). Drive in the left lane next to the center divider. At Shane drive make a "U" turn around the center divider and back track on Hilltop Drive to Moyers Road. Exit Hilltop Drive onto Moyers Road to the right. Go to the first stop sign and turn left onto Wiswall Drive. Proceed to the stop sign at the bottom of the hill which is O'Brien. While stopped at the stop sign look to your left and you will see 2823 Wiswall Drive. There is plenty of parking. The shop is through the carport at the left of the house.

Show and Tell & High School Woodworking Competition Photos From May Meeting.
The Big Story this month is that the High School Woodworking Competition was a Big Success! Here is the whole story, and a Big Thanks to Dick Ellis for putting together a committee that made the competition work.

High school woodworking programs were given support by a group of East Bay woodworkers this month. Students from seven high schools submitted more than 70 projects. Nine judges from Diablo Woodworkers evaluated the student work. The program was proposed by member Mark Saake who saw a student competition when visiting a woodworking show in Las Vegas. He was joined by several other members including Jeff Traeger, George Lucido, Dave Wittenbrock, Gordon Fry, and retired ITE teachers Rich Schwerin and Dick Ellis. Based on the success of this initial event, the Diablo Woodworkers plan on expanding the program in 2009.

Nine high school woodworking students shared $900 in awards at the first Diablo Woodworkers competition for Contra Costa County High School woodworking students. The awards were gift certificates from a variety of woodworking stores, hardware stores and lumber suppliers.
