Box for Checkers,
After I finished my checkerboard I wanted to have a small box for the checkers. I scrolled a mahogany 1/2 inch thick butterfly and glued felt into the box which was 5 inches by 7 inches and about 3 inches deep. I purchased checkers from Rockler to finish the project. The box was something I had sitting in my shop, and repurposed it for the checkers. I just dressed it up a little and put a couple of coats of Polyurethane on it. -- Bob Bean. July 2020.

Checkerboard,
Checkerboard squares are 7/16 thick Dutch Elm both heart wood and sap wood. These are scrap pieces my niece had left over from the floor she installed in her house. The heart wood flooring strips are chocolate brown and a little soft for a hardwood floor.

I cut the heart wood and sap wood into 2 inch strips; glued them and cut them again to glue them into squares. I had the basic glue up in my shop for 20 plus years and it stayed together without any problem. I think because the sap and heart wood had the same moisture and shrinkage rate? I made a frame of cherry wood that is also 20 years old. It is finished with Verathane gloss which it is too reflective to get a good picture. July 2020.

- I completed my Morris Chair during this Stay at Home 2 months.
The chair was adapted from the design of a Morris Chair in the April, 2011 Popular woodworking magazine. I had a Danish Modern armchair which I had recovered with arts & crafts upholstery about 5 years ago and wanted to match the rest of my arts and crafts furniture. So I replaced the legs with Morris Chair legs, and added the front & back supports. The project is white oak which I stained with Jell Stain and finished with Verathane.

I used Mortise and Tenon joints on the sides of the chair while the front and back stretchers were screwed and glued to the legs. What I learned when I attached the legs was that the front stretched was 26 inches and the back stretcher was 24 inches, so the seat tapers slightly to the back. I feel this taped seat improved the appearance and comfort of the chair. May 2020.
