Jeff retired in the late 1990’s after a 32-year career with Chevron. His retirement plan centered on woodworking. Soon after retiring he discovered the woodworking program at Mt. Diablo Adult Education and Diablo Woodworkers. The program became his second career, so to speak, as he began teaching woodworking classes and joined the club’s planning group to help manage club affairs.

Jeff began outfitting his home shop and quickly determined that woodworking machines were expensive, and that quality was declining. After wrestling with problems with a new Delta drill press and jointer, he set out to learn how to tune up and repair woodworking machines. That pursuit led him to replace his new equipment with older, higher-quality machines that he restored back to new condition. Soon, restoring old machines from the 1950 and 60’s became a second hobby and, at times, overtook his time working with wood. Recently he has developed an interest in metalworking machinery. These machines provide a new challenge due to their complexity.

Jeff's woodworking interests principally center on box making. Building small things worked well in his original shop with limited space. He was introduced to box making by Tony Lydgate and Doug Stowe. Both are box making authors and were guest speakers in the early days of our club. As time progressed and my shop expanded he started working on larger projects. Classes taught by Brian Condran and the Krenov modern style of furniture design became a major influence as were Tim Killen’s classes about reproducing classical furniture.

For the May Shop Tour, Jeff will be demonstrating how to tune up a bandsaw at the shop of Pat DiMaggio. The address will be provided in an email to the club shortly before the event.
