Paul is a retired union stationary engineer who worked in city high rise buildings and at the San Francisco Convention Center. He took up woodworking as a hobby in about 1980, and soon after met Simon Watts who was then an editor for Fine Woodworking. Simon was teaching boat building at Hyde Pier, and Paul and Simon became close friends and partnered in building boats (see photo of their younger selves in their boat shop!) and later in making furniture. Paul also built much of his house (from Frank Lloyd Wright plans) in the Oakland hills, including plumbing, electrical, doors, windows, and cabinets.
More recently Paul has been converting his shop to nearly completely hand tools and phasing out most power tools, with inspiration from both Simon Watts from years ago and more recently from wonderful videos from Paul Sellers. This includes the Paul Sellers workbench that both Pauls built entirely with hand tools. Paul M. says, “When I am working in the shop I am always talking to someone. Is it Simon or is it Sellers? Both are English with almost the same accent. Both have the same attitude about woodworking. And the two of them share the same love for vintage hand saws and planes. Does it matter? I never feel alone in my shop.”
